Makin' a RPG: Part 1 - Your character

Hey! Ok let's get started! First off, we are going to be working in a bird's-eye view. So we'll be looking down at your guy. It might be best to enable the grid. This is totally optional. If you choose to press "Ctrl+Alt+G" (or VIEW> GRID>Edit Grid) to bring up the Grid Options. Make the width 10px and height 10px. hit 'show grid' and 'snap to grid' and click OK. You should now have a grid on your stage.

STEP 1

Alright draw a circle(or a square, it doesn't matter) to use as your character. Convert into a Movie Clip (or MC) by pressing 'F8' or 'Insert> Convert to symbol'. Now you have a MC!

STEP 2

Now double click on your MC. Add a layer and add the action:
stop();
Add a frame on both layers and on the actionscript layer add another:
stop();
on your character level in the second keyframe, Convert it to a symbol and in that symbol make him walk. (or if you are lazy, just make it red so you can tell if it's working later) Head back to the main stage.
STEP 3
Now you have your MC Character. Give it the instance name: guy
in the MC 'guy' add the following actions: (You don't have to be in expert mode)

onClipEvent (load) { speed = 10; } onClipEvent (enterFrame) { if (Key.isDown(Key.UP)) { _rotation=0; _y-=speed; gotoAndStop(2); } if (Key.isDown(Key.DOWN)) { _rotation=180; _y+=speed; gotoAndStop(2); } if (Key.isDown(Key.LEFT)) { _rotation=270; _x-=speed; gotoAndStop(2); } if (Key.isDown(Key.RIGHT)) { _rotation=90; _x+=speed; gotoAndStop(2); } if (!Key.isDown(Key.RIGHT) && !Key.isDown(Key.UP) && !Key.isDown(Key.DOWN) && !Key.isDown(Key.LEFT)) { gotoAndStop(1); } }
