Imagemaps

I'm very sorry about the huge delay between articles. Computer-wise, the past few months have been hell for me. My old computer finally gave up, but not without a fight, and it took a few weeks before I finally decided to put it to rest. However in a final attempt to save it I gave it to a correspondent in Dell to try and fix. Unfortunately, not realising the valuable un-backed-up information it contained, he formatted the hard drive. I lost hundreds of megabytes of valuably work and hundreds of hours or work time.

However I've managed to pick myself up again and I'll be writing the articles on time in future. Please excuse the previous delays and trust me this time!

I've completely lost track of the Frames tutorials but I'm pretty sure that I've covered everything, if there is anything you are still unsure of please read my other frames tutorial at http://www.usheen.com/html/.

I mentioned imagemaps before in the article entitled "Designing an Entire Homepage Using Tables". An Imagemap is an image with hot-spots. A hot-spot is a defined area of an image that, when clicked upon, sends the user to another page. So imagemaps are very similar to links, except that with a link each image can only link to one page...

<a href=page2.htm><img src=p2.gif></a>

... and an imagemap can link to different pages, each accessed by clicking a different part of the image.

Before you can define a specific area on an image you need to be able to find out the co-ordinates of a point on the image. There are probably many simple programs out there to do this but I think the best idea is for you to download an image editor, which you can use to create graphics for your site. This editor will also be able to tell you what you need to know to create an imagemap.

My favourite free image editor is Paint Shop Pro. You can download the latest version of this at http://www.jasc.com. It is arguably as good as expensive image editing software. It is quite a large download, but it is also available on the cover of many computer magazines, which you might find much easier.

This program will fulfil all your image editing needs, but takes practice before you can master it. There are many tutorials you can find on the Internet to help you but I will help you with just this tiny part.
