Introduction

In this tutorial we’ll show you how to create some very stylish, old-style wooden buttons, mostly by using layer styles, but another main helper here is filters.

Step 1.

First start by making a new document, for this tutorial I used a size of 380 x 320 pixels.
Fill the background with a dark brown (#432402) then apply Filter > Noise > Add Noise with an amount of about 2.0.

Duplicate the Background layer then apply Filter > Brush Strokes > Spatter with any old settings. Change the layer mode for the duplicated layer to Lighten.

Duplicate the duplicate layer, change the layer mode for duplicate 2 to Overlay and lower the opacity to 20%.

On a new layer, draw a few rectangles using the Rectangular Marquee Tool, fill them with either white or black, then change the layer mode to either Soft Light or Overlay, lower the opacities for these layers to 20-60%.

Step 2.

Ok, let’s start the button.
First start by getting out the Rounded Rectangle Tool, you can see where to find it in the below image:

Use similar settings to these shown below:

Change your foreground color to #a07335 then create a new layer. Draw a small button in the middle of the document somewhere.

After drawing your shape, use the Single Row Marquee Tool to selet one pixel from the middle of the shape, go into transform mode (ctrl+T) then drag it upwards.

So you should have a flat top like so:

Lastly for this step, cut about 15 pixels off of the top of shape so the shape is only about 40 pixels in height.
